WVU bounces back from Cincy let down to take number 20 from USF, 64-50

To say the least this game was more or less a must win to keep WVU where it needs to be for both NCAA and Big East tourney. WVU got win number 20 overall and 9 in the Big East today. As it appears today, WVU can finish anywhere from its current 8th to at best 6th in the Big East going into the Big East tourney. A win over Depaul and a loss by Cincy or Prov assures WVU a first game bye. I look forward to Weezie's conference breakdown as it were this week. Anyway, WVU gets a necessary win today. How does a win over Depaul assure us a first round bye? Cinci could easily win 10 games and they hold the tie-breaker (USF & Seton Hall left). Syracuse has to face a Marquette team with out James. They should beat Rutgers. It looks like to me we need Villanova to beat Providence to guarantee a WVU bye.

You are correct. It is slightly more difficult than I made it. A WVU win and a Cincy or Providence loss and WVU is assured a bye.

Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com in his "Bubble watch" blog has now moved WVU into the LOCK section. Not that he makes the selections but it is nice to see.

Sorry Geek. You're a little off on this one. Providence will only finish behind WVU in a two way tie. Any tie with 3 or more teams and Providence finishes ahead of WVU. So a Providence loss doesn't assure WVU a bye. And you're a little off too Greg. Cincinnati only holds a head to head tiebreaker and scenarios are strong that 3 or 4 teams will finish 10-8 which could put WVU ahead of UC in a tiebreak depending on who the 3rd team is. It's not really relevant since if WVU finishes 10-8, even if they are the 9 seed, their RPI and strength of schedule will make them a lock for the NCAA's ahead of Providence and Cincinnati.

You can go to bigeast.org and find the tiebreaking scenarios and see what I'm talking about if you can make sense of it.

Sorry guys, I was off. Cincy and Syracuse hold all the multiple team tiebreaker advantages over WVU and beat WVU head to head. Providence holds all the tiebreaker advantages in multiple team scenarios with a victory over Pitt. This makes the 'Nova/Providence game meaningless to WVU unless Syracuse and Cincinnati both don't finish 10-8.

Obviously, if WVU finishes 11-7 then we would want Providence to lose to 'Nova, unless Syracuse splits which would again mean that a Providence win would be meaningless.

In short, it doesn't matter to WVU if Providence beats or loses to Villanova unless that causes them to be in a two way tie with Providence.
