As we are about 4-5/12ths into the season. I thought it was a good time to take stock in which conferences are fairing the best. I will analyze the conference strength based upon the top 34 teams present in this poll 34 pts for 1st place team; 1 pt. for 34 place team. Conferences will be rated by total points present in this poll:

    1. SEC (144 pts.) This conference has 7 teams represented in this poll, which include the 1st,3rd, 7th, 12th, 18th, 27th, and 33rd ranked teams.

    2. Big 12 (85 pts.) This conference has 6 teams represented in this poll, which include the 2nd, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 27th, and 32nd ranked teams.

    3. Big 10 (78 pts.) This conference has 4 teams represented in this poll, which include the 5th, 13th, 15th, and 29th ranked teams.

    4. Big East (77 pts.) This conference has 5 teams in this poll, which include the 8th, 16th, 17th, 26th, and 31st ranked teams.

    5. Pac 10 (72 pts.) This conference has 5 teams in this poll, which include the 11th, 14th, 20th, 24th and 34th ranked teams.

    6. ACC (68 pts.) This conference has 3 teams in this poll, which include the 4th, 9th, and 24th ranked teams.

    7. Mountain West (48 pts.) This conference has 3 teams in this poll, which include the 6th, 21st, and 30th ranked teams.

    8. WAC (25 pts.) This conference has the 10th ranked team.

Conference USA, MAC, and Sun Belt Conferences have no teams ranked in this poll.

For being 4 to 5 games into the season it appears based on our poll that the Big East is doing just fine.

I would note that at least one computer poll likes WVU in the top 25. Sagarin Top 50 (ELO_CHESS) has WVU at 21. I note this to show that maybe just maybe on the field performance can overcome historical bias. This same poll has USF at 18 and Cincy at 5. Hmmm. Big East gets some respect? Could it be that the ESPN blowhards might be missing something? I would also point each of you to the link at bottom of page regarding POLLSPEAK. It remains the watchdog of all of the national polls.

WVU at 17? Come on, I'm a homer and don't believe they deserve it yet. Beat somebody first, then we'll talk. I agree they have the talent, but if we went by talent alone, there would be no need to play the game. USC, LSU, Florida we could just rank them now...

WVU still seems to be missing something to me. I think it's either leadership or intensity or both. Until they show the can win a big game and keep the intensity up for games they should win (Syracuse), I holding off on ranking them.

Then why rank Fla either. Their toughest win is at home against Kentucky. WVU lost on the road to Auburn. I don't a distinction in results and schedules that gives Florida any advantage over WVU. WVU is as deserving as anybody right now until teams get away from the cupcakes (that means you Cincinnati!) and into the meatier part of thier schedules.

If you want to rank talent, rank Florida and the 'Eers. If you are looking at this seasons' results, then Florida (among many other teams, they are just an example) should be ranked just as low as WVU.

You can't seriously be comparing Florida's vs WVU's talent level.

Florida is returning all but Percy Harvin to the National Championship team from a year ago. They have 0 losses.

WVU is coming off a 4 loss season without Pat White.

Granted these things will work themselves out as the season progresses but it's hard to justify a 3-1 WVU team that hasn't been able to take care of the football.

I can see them getting better and earning their ranking as they prove they can win these games. But they need to show it on the field.

Florida has done nothing to prove they can't. In fact, those players already have a couple of titles under their belt!

And for the record, I have them #3 behind Bama and Texas. Bama's win over Va Tech appears to be the most impressive win of the year so far! But its still early...

I wasn't trying to say that WVU has the talent that Florida has. In your post, you were saying that WVU has talent and if we were ranking teams on talent there would be no reason to play the game.

My position is that I don't look at past years' results, recruiting, or silly pundits' expectations. I look at field results. That makes it easier to justify a 3-1 WVU that has played a more difficult schedule (at this point of the season) than the likes of Florida and most other teams in the rankings. Obviously that will change for Florida (and LSU) after this week. But to this point, I haven't been more impressed with Florida's results over WVU's.
