I was looking around to find some reports about Pat White's practices at the Senior Bowl.  I found a video at ESPN.com which mentioned White.  It was not a good report from their perspective, but I'll hold off judgement until after the game is played and the combine.

WVU has second half let down but comes away with win against USF

The first half was impressive and the second half left something to be desired but I would rather win an ugly one than lose a heart felt hard fought lost. Obviosly, the Eers were lead both in minutes and in performance by Da Sean Buttler. It was very nice to get 37 minutes his 27 ponts were welcome as well he was also a sturdy 3 for 6 from three point land and an impressive 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Truly he was the difference maker. Good game Da.

WVU boasts 3 participants in Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama

Pat White, Pat McAfee, and Ellis Lankster all received and accepted invites to the Senior Bowl. Kickoff for the 60th game is set for 6 pm (CT) in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium and the game will be televised by the NFL Network. (Boo hiss for those of us that can't get that game, anyone who can tape the same and send me a copy would place me in their debt, ok I am already in your debt but more so.) The NFL network will also televise the practices sessions next week leading up to the game. The official Web Site for the game contains all event information.


On another note Mortty Ivy is representing the Eers in today's East West Shrine Game.

WVU Men and Women do their duty and down the Herd...

WVU once again has taken it upon itself to bring the broom out against the herd in the "classic" aka... state government home game. Anyway, the women were first up and played a back and forth game with the Marshall ladies, but in the end they settled the matter quite nicely 74-65. The Men after trailing 4 to nadda decided to dish out a laugher against the Herd. The men were out in front by as many as 21 but the Herd hit some long balls to make it closer but the Eers managed a sound double digit win 87-76. It was a night where "Truck" Bryant really took control playing a better brand of defense than he has all year. It was nice to see him perform well on both sides of the ball. His teammate Da said, "Truck scored; he played defense solidly... He just has to play more consistently on defense. But he had a nice little thing going on.'' Huggs felt that WVU got what it wanted from Marshall. I gathered from his post game interview that he was underwhelmed by some of the intensity that let Marshall get the game close to single digits but he was "happy" to see the team close out the win. Now on to the painful Big East Schedule.

On another note rumors are starting to surface that Joe Alexander is on the trading block. From Milwaukee to Memphis, as details become available I will forward the same to you.

The guys played hard but depth once again becomes a factor. Da was out for most of the second half in fact giving us only 1:30 in playing time. He needs to be on the floor as was evidenced by his performance in the first half. Tough loss. On to the Herd in Chucktown.

This may not be how we drew it up at beginning of season but a nice finish. I would not have had so many Little 11 teams in the poll and would have voted UTAH 1.5 in the polls for their season but the polls were pretty close. MOST notably those little wimps from Pittsburgh are looking up at us again. That will always give me a smile. Thoughts on the future lead me to point out that WVU has 6 verbals of the 4 Star variety. None to shabby. We shall see how it pans out. Oh and I have to leave this football season on this note. PAT WHITE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!

Mountaineer Hoops Info.

I didn't see most of the game last night so I don't want to go into too much analysis.  The box score does tell a huge story, however, and though WVU's defense appeared very solid holding UConn to under 40% shooting and forcing 18 turnovers, it should be noted that they shot 57% in the second half.  Anyway, the reason I didn't get to see much of the game is because I don't get ESPNU.  I saw a little bit of bonus coverage on ESPN2 and with about 7 minutes to go, I was able to find the game on the internet for free at channelsurfing.net   So if you can't find the game on TV (or if you're not able to be there in person), this site appears to be a good place to find games on the web.

'Eers Impressive In Conference Opener.

WVU got a big win on Saturday. It doesn't seem like much. Seton Hall is undersized compared to the rest of the Big East. However, getting road wins in the Big East regardless of the opponent will be difficult and this was a game the Mountaineers could not afford to lose. This is especially true with contests against UConn and Marquette coming up next. Besides, it wasn't just that we won a road game, but as the statistics will attest, WVU played quite well. Six players scored in double figures. 18 assists on 32 field goals is nice. We won the rebounding margin handily. 13 turnovers is also a solid number. And finally, shooting percentages on offense, defense, and at the free throw line were impressive.

The only glaring concern I could see on Saturday were the minutes of Truck Bryant. The box score will show that he played 34 minutes which isn't too much to ask. However, they were the first 34 minutes of the game, as he picked up his fourth foul w/ ~6 minutes to play and wasn't needed for the remainder of the contest. He had just committed his 3rd foul a couple minutes earlier and both fouls were not what you would call aggressive or "good" fouls. In both instances he was out of position and fatigue may have been a factor. Fortunately for the 'Eers, the team handled the full court pressure very well in the last six minutes without Bryant in the game. With Mazulla's situation uncertain, it will be key to make sure Bryant is getting proper rest throughout the season. I don't believe he can play for 36-40 minutes a game and last in the most physical league in the NCAA's. Bryant is an outstanding freshman point guard, but I don't think that anyone could consistently play 38 minutes a game and still be effective in the long haul of the grueling Big East schedule.

No more #5!

WVU's administration showed it's willingness and ability to make major trigger happy decisions following last year's Fiesta Bowl victory. It's disappointing that they couldn't make another one this year and honor #5 immediately following the season. After Pat White spent 4 years giving us his blood, sweat, tears, and heart and soul on the football field and handling himself with grace, dignity, class and humility off of it, it would have been fitting to show him how much we truly appreciate him by retiring his number immediately.

I'll remember many moments about Pat White's career. But the thing that will always stick with me about Pat White is the kind of teammate he is. He is extremely unselfish always deflecting the spotlight when it was shining on him and never seeking it when it was being shared w/ Slaton. And he is still a natural leader. He never let his frustrations show or become public or cast blame when things weren't going as well as they should. Pat White's greatness on the field is easy to identify. But it's the complete man that truly make him the greatest Mountaineer.
